These chessmen are made in the traditional centuries-old Thai style. The pieces themselves are of solid plastic, The tallest piece, the knight stands 2 2/8 inches tall. Thai Chess (Makruk) is a board game that evolved from an Indian chess game called "Chaturong". It is based on the tales of the Hindu epic Ramayana. In the story, Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, wanted her husband to relax after a tiring day of strategic planning so she invented the game of chess. Originally the game was designed to be played by four people but was amended later so that it could be played by two people. The basic rules of Thai Chess are similar to those of international chess, but there are some variations.
