ChessCentral The Volkh - Unique Wood Chess Set with Chess Board and Storage (Carpathian Chess Set Collection)

High in the mystic Carpathian Mountains of Europe, home of the Dragon and the vampire myth, you will find artisans that draw deep from a wellspring of history dating back centuries, honoring the finest traditions in wood carving. This chess set is named after the mythological deity Jarilo the War God, honored in the mist shrouded mountain. This is just one of the handcrafted artisan chess sets in the Carpathian Collection. These unique and handsomely designed chess pieces are made of Hornbeam and Sycamore both woods that are found in the forests of Europe. Hornbeam (sometimes known as Ironwood) is mostly white and used for intricate and decorative carvings. Sycamore offers a dark brown, smooth textured wood, perfect for the dark pieces. These woods coupled with the craftsmanship of the Carpathian artisans make for some of the finest moderately priced chess sets available in the marketplace today. Enjoy the airy elegance of the Kings and Queens while appreciating the solidity of the Bishops and Rooks - and relish the hand decorated craftsmanship, executed by a special carving and burning technique. Carved from Hornbeam and Sycamore, the wooden chessmen lie secure in their felt lined form-fitted slots when not in use or on display. That's because the Volkh chess set comes with a folding case with ornate fittings, crafted from Beech and Birch. Flip the latch, take out the chess pieces and turn the case over to reveal a woodgrain chess board with algebraic coordinates on all four sides. Of course each chess piece has a felted bottom to protect the board. King Height: 3.25"; Square Size: 1.875" Dimensions, Case Folded: 17.25" x 8.75" x 2.125".
